SCDIO — Well being for all
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene — Tanzania

Well being for all

We work to improve the well-being of disadvantaged communities through sustainable, community-owned Water, Sanitation and Hygiene solutions — built with engineering excellence and owned by the people they serve.

Rationale

Why SCDIO exists

Despite national progress, many rural and disadvantaged communities in Tanzania still lack reliable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services. Infrastructure projects often fail due to limited community ownership, inadequate environmental considerations, and weak maintenance systems. SCDIO was established to bridge this gap.

Core values

01

Integrity

Serving communities ethically while upholding organizational standards.

02

Accountability

Taking ownership of commitments, tasks, and results.

03

Dedication

Demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to communities, donors, and partners.

04

Respect

Valuing diverse perspectives and recognizing contributions.

05

Dependability

Ensuring reliable performance in all situations.

Areas of intervention

Four thematic areas, one outcome

Designed as a single system — technically sound, environmentally sensible, and locally governed.

All programmes
3.1

Water Resources Management & Climate Resilience

Protecting water sources through environmental conservation, catchment management, and climate-smart practices to ensure long-term water security.

  • Catchment management and environmental conservation
  • Climate-smart practices for long-term water security
  • Hydro-geological assessment of sustainable sources
3.2

Safe & Clean Community Water Supply Systems

Designing and implementing improved water supply schemes — solar-powered, solar-hybrid, and gravity-fed — tailored to local hydro-geological conditions.

3.3

Institutional & Community Sanitation and Hygiene

Eliminating open defecation and improving hygiene practices through community triggering, household sensitization, and construction of safe WASH facilities in schools and health centers.

3.4

Community Empowerment & Governance

Strengthening local governance through formation and capacity building of Community Based Water Supply Organizations (CBWSOs) to ensure ownership, accountability, and financial sustainability.

  • Formation and training of CBWSOs
  • Financial sustainability and tariff setting
  • Inclusive, accountable local leadership

Our approach

Communities are co-creators, not beneficiaries

SCDIO applies a unified Human-Centered and Participatory Approach across every programme.

4.1

Empathize & Engage

Understanding community needs, cultural dynamics, gender roles, and environmental realities through direct engagement.

4.2

Co-Design & Triggering

Using community triggering to motivate collective action and co-design solutions that fit local lifestyles and environments.

4.3

Collaborative Implementation

Working side-by-side with community members, ensuring inclusive participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups.

4.4

Sustain & Empower

Establishing and training CBWSOs and water committees to manage, operate, and maintain WASH systems long after project completion.
